From Brokenhearted to Healed Soul: Hearing Whispers Book Review

The book Hearing Whispers (Amazon ad) by Tracy Wainwrigth is one of those books that are hard to put down.  As each chapter in the main character's (Sarah) life is completed, you want to go on to the next to find out what happens to her.  Will she get over the  broken heart that grew out of disappointment of two men from her youth and childhood?  This is a story of a woman who is just starting her adult life and a new career.  She must learn to trust others again and move forward to the person she is meant to be.   Not t give too much away, but Sarah finds a new love not only in a man, but in her redeeming God.

Tracy Wainwright's writing style is easy-to-read and her storytelling is interesting.  Hearing Whispers will get you personally involved with Sarah's journey.  Although I will not tell you too much of the story, as it can spoil the readers fun, I can highly recommend adding this book to your reading list this summer.  This book will take you through Sarah moving from bitterness to a healed soul that is open to experiencing new friendships and true love, as well as growing in a spiritual relationship with God.  I give it 5 stars!

Spoiler alert! Within the love story of Hearing Whispers, another mystery of an unknown sister is also introduced.  Will the mystery of the lost sister be resolved in the the next book Open Arms or will readers have to keep wondering how that part of the story plays out until a future release in the series?  Find out about more about the book series on The God Bless Girl blog.

For those looking for a low-carbohydrate ,high-protein diet option, the South Beach diet (on Amazon) (on Amzona) is one my doctor recommends for consistent and healthy weight lose that could become a way of life to keep the pounds off.  The diet book is into 3-phases meal plans for 2-weeks each with different recipes to prevent boredom.  You can repeat that plan if you like it to continue to lose more weight.   Then once you decide to stick with the low-carb lifestyle, you may consider buying one of the supplemental cookbooks or search the web for more recipe.  Below are some sample recipes from a few of Dr. Agatston books to give you an idea to decide if this is something you might want to try.

Always consult a doctor before starting a diet or exercise program!

Yummy Smoothie Recipes for Weight Loss - Top Seven Healthy Recipe Books

I got into smoothies when I did the 21-day diet, as that is what you have for breakfast most mornings.  That book only has four smoothie recipes in it.  So I decided to search the internet for a few new ideas.  Mostly i got recommendations for weight-loss recipe books or not-so-healthy recipe websites, although some sites offered a few recipes from the books.  The list of seven books below are the most popular "diet smoothie" books with the highest Amazon rankings, along with  links to "try-it" sites where available.
  1. Top 60 Smoothie Recipes to Lose Belly Fat and Boost Energy by Stephanie N. Collins
  2. Simple Green Smoothies: 100+ Tasty Recipes by Hansard and Sellner - samples on author's website.
  3. Zero Belly Smoothies by David Zinczenko (author of Zero Belly Diet and more... see videos below regarding each book) - sample recipes on Eat This, Not That website
  4. Weight Loss: 20 Proven Smoothie Recipes by Sara Rider
  5. The Healthy Smoothie Bible of 100+ recipes by Farnoosh Brock
  6. Weight Loss Smoothies: 33 Healthy and Delicious Smoothie Recipes by Sara Price
  7. Smoothies for Weight Loss: 37 Delicious Smoothies by Jackson Nash
These two paperback books from Mendocino Press got 4-stars on Amazon:  Smoothie Recipe Book: 150 Smoothie Recipes and 70 recipes in Smoothie Recipe Book for Beginners.

Avoid getting smoothies outside of hone, as most are made with flavored syrup in addition to fruit - so the calorie count can be high!  If you are planning to meet someone at a smoothie shop and are not sure of the calorie count, check their website or CalorieKing before leaving the house or office.

Always consult a doctor before starting a diet or exercise program!

Nevertheless, Attitude Adjustment and Thanksgiving in Adversity

In her series of books based on The Never-The-Less Principle (link ro Amazon), Marion Bond West  shares her concept for adjusting a negative attitude to a more positive one.  She bases this idea on the way the scriptures using "nevertheless" are written.  The way the principle works is to take a negative complaint and add a positive spin to it with the word nevertheless (never-the-less) at the end of the statement.  I think this is a great way to turn disappointment and adversity into positive thinking and thanksgiving for our blessings,

Below are a few examples that may work for you or as a starting place.
  • My son's ADHD has me constantly worn out, nevertheless, I am blessed with a healthy and happy son.
  • I have an illness (or injury) that keeps me from doing everything I want, nevertheless, I have others that are willing to help me with what I need to do.
  • My daughter's seemly constant obsession with things disappoints me, nevertheless, I have an intelligent and caring daughter.
  • Prepping for the holidays really stresses me out, nevertheless, I enjoy the season and am able to relax after everything is done.
  • My spouse  always watching sports is annoying, nevertheless, he is a good husband and loves me unconditionally,
For some examples related to the job and more on this theory, visit 2bProductive post Nevertheless, Adjusting Attitude at Work.  If you are willing to share other statements you would make, please add them in the comments for this post.  Thanks!

Three New Testament Bible Study Guides from Grandma's Bible

People, who used Have You Got Mustard? study guide to grow their faith, have asked me when I might do another Bible Study.  This summer I put together three books to cover studying the New Testament (NT).  These guides are in a study series based on my Grandma's Bible.  Each book includes my Grandma’s notes and selected verses she highlighted for personal study.

Every Christian should know what the Holy Bible says for themselves.  Study guides help  Christians dive deeper into God’s Word. All Christians should study Acts and Revelation so they know what is there. Studying the Gospel is an excellent way for new Christians to learn who Jesus is. Some say the four Apostles writing the Gospels seem to report things differently or even contradict each other. Consider how a detective investigates and interviews multiple witnesses. Each witness give the detective information based on their viewpoint so he can form the full story of what actually happened.  So each Apostle shares the story of Jesus from their unique perspective.

Below are details on these books and the subtitles link to Amazon to purchase 5x8” paperback or Kindle ebook .  For group study, discussion questions are provided at the end of each Bible book covered.

1.      Grandma's Bible: Letters to the Body of Christ is on the letters to the seven churches from the Apostle Paul, published June 18, 2018.

The Bible books covered include:
Romans
I Corinthians
II Corinthians
Galatians
Ephesians
Philippians
Colossians
I Thessalonians
II Thessalonians

2.      Grandma's Bible: Letters to the Followers of Christ is on letters to Christians, published July 10, 2018.

Books covered include:
I Timothy
II Timothy
Titus
Philemon
Hebrews
James
I Peter
II Peter
I John
II John
III John
Jude

3.      Grandma's Bible: The Gospel and Signs of Christ is on the 4 Gospels, so Christians learn who Jesus is. It includes signs of Jesus in "The Acts of the Apostles" and of his second coming in "Revelation of Saint John the Divine", published July 24, 2018.

The Bible books covered include:
Matthew
Mark
Luke
John
Acts
Revelation

Why did I choose these cover colors?  Green is for spiritual Growth, which was the purpose of letters written to Christians.  Red represents Words (and Blood) of Christ, so the books of the Bible in that guide include lots of red-letter text for Jesus speaking.

All the above guides recommend studying the Bible using at least two versions and have lots of space for note-taking.  This can be done with versions of print Bibles or on-line.  Verses in these Bible Study guides to re-read are formatted so they may be easily copied from e-book version to paste into electronic Bibles.  Underlined verses are those that included a handwritten margin note by my Grandma, which shows in the image at beginning of personal study.

BibleGateway.com is an excellent source of multiple Bible versions on-line.  Check out how to view multiple versions on one screen from their instructional blog post.   If you want to dive deeper for your notes, BibleGateway also has a few  FREE options under the Study link.  This link is to the right of the verses.  To find out about these options, check out how to use commentaries, study Bibles, and more on their blog.

Interesting finds in the week following publication of last book in NT series when doing searches of my chosen series name. I found a few wonderful things to share.  On the Godly Women Blog,  I found examples of Christian grandmothers, each of which reminded me of parts of my own Grandma's character.  On Nona Kelley Carver's poetry site, I found a poem about her Grandma's Bible.  (You can find my poetry ebooks or my business books on my blogs.)  Also there was  that this old "Grandma's Bible" song from 2008 album recording by the Heritage Singers.  These song lyrics emphasize the importance of both Grandmas and the Holy Bible.  You can still buy the vintage CD on Amazon or on the singers website from the link above.  Lastly, I found this audio story regarding a lost/found Grandma's Bible on Guidelines International Ministry site.

Giving Children’s Adventure Book Series – Flavia, Harry, or American Classics

1st books from Harry or Flavia series
Are you looking for the perfect birthday or Christmas gift for a child?  How about the timeless gift of reading?  Most children love books, especially if there is adventure to experience a puzzle to solve!  You will find Amazon links below for several good book ideas.

You may know about the various American classic children and teen adventure and detective series featuring Bobbsey Twins (1904-1979), Encyclopedia Brown (1972-2012), Hardy Boys (1927-2016), Nancy Drew (1930-2003), and Tom Swift (1910-2008).  If you liked those classics and want to share them with the new generation, you can buy individual copies at many used book stores to see if they enjoy the stories as well.  If you want to get them every book in the series for a gift, click links above.

Of course you have also heard of the popular fantasy (1997-2007) series containing the adventures of Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling (English) .  Her individual book titles are listed at the bottom of this post if you are looking for one your child or grandchild may be missing from the series.  You can also buy the movies as well.  Bonus short stories in Hogwarts ebooks only.

Have you heard of Flavia De Luce mystery series (2010-present) by (Canadian) Alan Bradley? Flavia is into solving murder mysteries and science, especially as they relate to chemistry and botany.  Her older sisters are into literature and classical music.  So the reader learns a lot about science and is exposed to literary phrases and songs that may lead them to want to know more.  Below are the Flavia novels in order of publication.  Start with the first, as each novel references something in a previous murder.  My family loves these books!  Bonus short story only in ebook: The Curious Case of the Copper Corpse.

Grandma Parrish’s Pickle Recipes: Dill or Bread & Butter Versions

Homemade Pickles Packed Various Ways
In the back of the children’s book Mr. Pickle Goes to Pickle Island, I note learning activities that parents may want to do with their children after reading the book together.  One such activity is to make pickles from fresh cucumbers themselves.  I am creating this post to provide two of my grandmother’s pickle recipes so the pickle lovers out there can re-create these delectable food items during the summer produce season.  These recipes appeared in the 1979 edition of “A Book of Favorite Recipes” by ladies of Coppell First Assembly of God Church.

Fresh Pack Dill Pickles Recipe
Ingredients:
7 quarts whole cucumbers, 3-5 inches long (approximately 17-18 pounds)
2 gallons of 5% Brine (see recipe below)
6 cups vinegar
¼ cup sugar
9 cups water
2 Tablespoons whole mixed pickling spice, tied into small cheesecloth bag.
Add-ins Per Jar:
Mustard seed
Garlic
Dill
Directions:
1.    Wash cucumbers thoroughly.  Cover with 5% Brine and let stand overnight in ice box (aka refrigerator).
2.    Next day, drain cucumbers.
3.    Combine vinegar, salt, sugar, water, and pickling spice bag in pot.  Heat to boiling and let stand while packing cucumbers into quart jars.
4.    After packing in cucumbers, add 2 teaspoons mustard seed, 1 glove garlic, and 3 heads dill to each jar
5.    Cover with boiling spice liquid to about ¼ inch of top of jar.
6.    Wipe tops and seal jars.
7.    Process in boiling water 20 minutes.

View Canning Homemade No Fail Dill Pickles video on packing and boiling jars, which starts at step 3 above.  This video contains another grandmother’s recipe, so you can use the above or use that one. You can tell by the look of the cucumbers he already did the overnight soak and drain in steps 1-2.

Five Percent Brine Recipe
Ingredients:
2 gallons of water
1 ½ cups pickling salt
Directions:
1.    Heat water to boil.  Dissolve salt in water.
2.    Cool brine mixture to room temperature before using.

Some pickle recipes call for vinegar instead, check Vinegar-Brine Pickling Method if you have a recipe that calls for that.

Bread and Butter Pickles Recipe
Ingredients:
25-30 medium cucumbers, sliced thin
(NOTE:  Grandma said zucchini squash may be used instead of cucumbers if you like.)
8 large onions
2 large bell peppers
½ cup pickling salt (for soaking in water)
5 cups cider vinegar
5 cups sugar (approximately 2 ½ pounds)
2 Tablespoons mustard seed
1 teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon cloves
Directions:
1.    Wash cucumbers and slice thin.
2.    Chop all remaining vegetables into cucumbers and add salt with enough cold water to cover.
3.    Let stand for 3 hours and then drain well.
4.    Combine vinegar, sugar, and spices in large kettle (aka pot).
5.    Bring to a boil, then add the drained vegetables and heat thoroughly.  Do not boil again.
6.    Pack into hot sterilized jars.
7.    Seal and place in boiling water bath for 5 minutes.
8.    Remove jars and cool.

View Depression Style Bread and Butter Pickles video on slicing and prepping the pickles a little differently from above recipe.  This video uses hot peppers and garlic to make them spicier but it does not include measurements, however it is very entertaining

The God Bless Girl Goes To Print!

Many people have requested that I publish The God Bless Girl Kindle e-book version in print. So everybody with me now - Jump for Joy!  The paperback version of The God Bless Girl is now available on Amazon!

A few people have asked me how I got the idea for this book.  Actually, I wrote, edited, and formatted the text, but I am not sure I can say it was all my idea.   I think God gave me book as a message to Christians in America before it is too late.

“…ignorance births intolerance, intolerance leads to bigotry, and bigotry breeds hate.”  - quote from 5th chapter of book

Each chapter in the book came to me in different nightly dreams when I was recovering from back surgery in 2015.  When I re-dreamed the first chapter and then another one, I decided it must be God trying to tell me something.  As I lay awake in bed, I prayed about it and then felt I was supposed to write the stories down.  I could not sit up to write or type, so I had my laptop placed on my stomach in order to make notes of key things I could remember from the different dreams.  Just doing that wore me out!

After I recovered enough from surgery to sit in a chair at my desk for a long period of time, I was able to work on my laptop some each day.  I reviewed the typed notes, prayed some more, and begin writing a chapter a day.  I was amazed how quickly and vividly God brought the images and words back to me.  Once I had the draft of the book written, I asked a few people to read it over to make sure it flowed well, was easy-to-read and understand, and that religious references from various backgrounds were accurate.  That led to several days to do the final steps of:  minor edits, grammar rechecks, formatting, and multiple uploads/reviews of the e-book to get it right.  Of course, all of those final four steps had to be repeated for a print version (which took 2 days this time).

“…anyone that uses profanity as an adjective is showing their lack of vocabulary…” - quote from 3rd chapter of book

Note to potential readers and buyers please understand that the paperback book costs more on Amazon than the e-book because it costs more to print and mail paperback books than it does for digital delivery. I get   very little from the book sales.  Since I feel this was a message from God to Americans, I plan to give any profits from book sales to Christian ministries.  The book is out there so that the words I was given in my dreams can be shared with anyone.  Please buy a copy for yourself and also share the book with others (buying 5 copies or bundling with other books can get you free shipping).

Visit The Good Bless Girl book webpage to request: flyer, slide, and images for social media.  To quickly view and buy, go to Amazon.  You may also want to follow @TheGodBlessGirl on Twitter or check out the inspirational blog.

Big Red Tractor as Church Analogy

Below is a video short for the children’s book The Big Red Tractor and the Little Village (on Amqazon) by Frances Chan.  Recently I viewed a one of his lessons from Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit (on Amazon).  In this lesson, the author (who is also a minister) compared his children’s story to the modern day Christian Church.  In his analogy, the church (townspeople) is always “pushing” things (tractor) just to try to survive by taking care of their own and fitting in with the world rather than reading and following the owner’s manual (Bible) and doing as directed there.  The Church should be unstoppable by recognizing the spirit and helping  more people.

Free e-Reader Apps for Computer, Phone, or Tablet

I sometimes give away my digital books (i.e. e-books or electronic books) to celebrate a milestone, or a new book release, or just because I suddenly feel like it.  When I announce a giveaway or the sale of a new e-book, someone always says “I would love to have your book, but I don’t have an e-reader.”  Below solves that problem for future readers.  To buy my books or check to see if there are currently any freebies, go to author page for Shirley Fine Lee on Amazon.

You do not have to have a Nook or a Kindle to read e-books.  Amazon offers free downloadable applications (apps) to let you read e-books on your computer, phone, or tablet.  Amazon offers three different ways to get the apps.
  1. The easiest way is if you are already on a book page, just scroll down below the image of the book cover to see and click on the option “Read on any device.”   Click on infographic in bottom of this post to enlarge it and read how to use that option.
  2. The option above eventually takes you to Amazon’s Read Everywhere with the Kindle App, which you can go to directly from this post or via Amazon help.
  3.  The third way is to find out what optional devices Amazon offers apps for on their page Free Kindle Reading Apps.  You can click on the links below each device to begin the process of downloading.

Is the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare Working?

Reviving
America
The current Affordable Care Act (insurance program) which was meant to reform healthcare causes more red tape and increases the cost to healthcare overall. Americans were told the purpose of this healthcare reform was to bring down prices and keep people healthy.

Rather than try to determine how to bring down the cost of healthcare, the government inflicted Obamacare on both the citizens and the healthcare providers.  Instead of the government doing any monitoring, they allowed insurance companies to bid on the job of monitor and get more dollars by getting new customers via the “Marketplace.”  How is this affliction?

This affliction is a new financial burden.  The healthcare providers have to do more administrative things and purchase non-health related technology to meet the requirements to process billing.  This requires cost in both time and money, so of course on the business-end they have to try to gain that money back through increasing prices.  As far as the citizens (new insurance customers) are concerned, they now have to pay for insurance they could not afford before in order to not be penalized at tax time. This is required regardless of whether they are healthy or not and whether they have children to cover or not.  If an individual or the small company they work for could not pay for insurance before, how is being forced to buy it beneficial?

This program is really not working for those with the lowest incomes!  Check out this story and video to see that poverty remains high and millions more DO NOT have health coverage.  America just cannot afford to keep Obamacare.  Still not convinced?

In his book Reviving America available on Amazon, Steve Forbes recommends repealing Obamacare and doing the following:
  • Require healthcare providers (doctor’s offices, clinics, & hospitals) to post their prices for all procedures and services so patients know what they will be charged and cam check the competition for best prices.
  •  Create a national (across state lines) market for insurance so consumers can shop around for coverage.
  • Allow both individuals and companies to receive tax deductions for purchasing health insurance.
  • Remove the costly coverage mandates of Obamacare.
  • Encourage Health Savings Accounts (HSA) by making them like IRAs.
  • Let states decide how Medicare should work for their residents by making the funds a grant to them rather than keeping money at federal levels.
