The Christmas Boots

Christmas spending can be hard on families whose main provider works in the construction business.  The construction business has building booms as well as collapses due to the economy.  Even when there is work, seasonal cycles of inactivity may exist due to Mother Nature.  If you work outdoors like my dad did, then you may not be able to work due to hard rains, snow, or ice.

I remember one Christmas when I was in my teens.  There had been lots of work and extra money to come in so it was a good year for my dad financially.  He and my stepmother decided to splurge at Christmas as they had not been able to in the past.  They bought all the boys fishing rods and some fishing lures.  My brothers were so excited they got up early the next day to go down to the creek and try to catch some fish.  It did not matter that the creek was not stocked with fish, they just wanted to try-out casting with the new poles.

Even though I like to fish too, I was secretly glad I did not get a pole.  What I got was a small purse size bottle of Charlie, which was my favorite cologne at the time.  Later, while the strewn paper and bows were being picked up and put into a trash bag, my dad came and sat beside me on the couch.  He told me that the cologne was not to be my only gift and that I would get the opportunity to select an additional gift to match the cost of the boys’ presents the following day when the stores opened.  Since I was too old for dolls, he wanted me to be able to select something I really wanted.  He asked if I had anything in mind I might want.

I had been drooling over some fashionable knee-high style boots for some time that a school mate had. I had asked my mom for boots as a Christmas present and did not get them.  So I told my dad I wanted some boots for Christmas in either black or white.  Being a practical girl, I specified colors that should go with any outfit I had.

The next morning, after breakfast, Dad and I headed out on the long drive from the country to the nearest large town.  Since I said I wanted boots, dad took me to a Western store as he was thinking cowboy, not fashion.  We looked around for some time to no avail.  So we went to a second boot shop (still not a regular shoe store) and he started by asking the clerk “Do you have any knee-high boots that zip up the side?  My daughter really wants that sort of boot.”

The sales clerk replied they had some but they were on an after-Christmas clearance so she could not guarantee they would have my size left.  She showed us where the boxes were to look through.  Not only did they have my size, they had one of my desired colors!  We found my Christmas boots and I was thrilled. Before we got in line to purchase the boots, my dad noted because they were on sale I was not spending my allotted limit.  I said I did not care as I was getting what I really wanted.  The sales clerk recommended we buy a pair of knee socks to wear inside the boots.  She showed us socks and we picked out a pair, then went to the register.

All this shopping and driving had taken some time and it was afternoon.  Dad suggested we have lunch before driving home.  We stopped at a Denny’s-like place and ordered.  I was a picky eater so I quickly turned to sandwiches to save time looking at the menu.  I do not remember what dad ordered but I believe it was steak, either rib-eye or chicken-fried as that is what he often got at restaurants.  When my order came, I must have had a strange look on my face.  Dad asked me if there was something wrong with my food.  I said I had ordered a roast beef sandwich which came with fries and I thought they brought me the wrong thing.  He noted it was called an open-faced sandwich with au jus  gravy on top to be eaten with a fork.  He suggested I try it and if I did not like it, we could order something else.  I tried it and I loved it!

The best thing about the lunch was not the food, it was all the stuff I learned about my dad’s childhood and interests that I was not aware of before.  With desert, we were in the restaurant for about one and a half hours.  Dad asked me about myself and school. I was a one-word answer kind-of-gal, so he really had to carry the conversation.  In doing so, I found my dad was more than a ditch-digger on a Caterpillar; he was a very interesting guy.

We drove home content and full.  I was happy with the boots sitting in my lap.  I showed them to everyone when we got home.  My baby sister loved them so much she asked if she could get some too (which she got for Christmas the next year.)

I wore those boots almost every day, except summer break when my mom insisted I wear sandals, for over two years.  I wore them even after they begin to crack and show much wear.  The only reason I was able to give them up was because mom bought me new ones so I would be willing to change.   As you can see, these were not the last boots I owned.  According to mom, they were not even the first as I had faux-fur trimmed “Beatle boots” for winter wear in elementary school.  However, the Christmas pair are the boots I remember best and they are what truly started my romance with fashion boots and footwear.  Yes, I am a shoe-aholic!

Storing Handbags and Accessories

Unique idea in video below - specialized bags for storing handbags, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories.  Watch video and check out http://bagadocious.com/.  They seem to have everything covered since you could put scarves in a jewelry bag by sending them a photo to include on outside.  However, I think they need to come up with a hat bag or box to be able to say they completely cover the full fashion accessory line.

Boot season is coming!

It is already Fall and the stores have brought out the boots to wear now through winter.

Assorted Ankle and Mid-calf Boots

I love boots and refuse to give them up for minor
foot ailments.  Instead I found these cushy Apara comfort insoles at Stein Mart to put inside them so I can survive walking – the key is be sure that the insoles have an adequate arch support.  In my favorite shoes that are too tight with the complete insoles, I use the sticky gel arch appeal to at least get that extra support.  I bought one each to try out and went back for more even though you can transfer them between shoes as long as the sticky part remains clean.

In case you missed some of the new Fall boots that were on Yahoo Shopping last month, be sure to visit Fall Boots Under $100 by Real Beauty. I’m not surprised that they were under $100 dollars most were either short ankle boots or UGLY!  However, after stating that, I have to admit I have some light purple boots that look somewhat like number 11.  My favorites were sexy #17 and preppy #4 – of course they would be the classic knee-high style. However, I could not wear the heel in #17 or the Houndstooth that I also was weird-enough to love because I could never submit my feet to that kind of height!   Tell me if you see anything in the photo article you really love or extremely hate.  After all, we do not have to be slaves to fashion trends, instead we should rock out own personal style!

8 Boot Trends and How NOT to Wear Them

8 pairs of ankle and mid-calf boots from my closet
We all know boots are popular in the fall where it is cold and in the winter everywhere.  Hey, I have even seen women cooking their feet in boots this summer heat.  Anyway, I saw the Shine article on 8 Boot Trends for This Fall and had to check it out.  I thought some of the clothes were cute but on each photo I thought “I would not wear those boots with that outfit!”  Not to say I would not wear the boots because I love boots – just saying the overall look was wrong for me.  After I finished looking at the 8 photos, I was thinking shame on you Shine for showing such bad examples.  However, I should have thought – how ridiculous Redbook since the original article came from that magazine.  I also did a “yuck” on the 4 Fall Fashion Trends the magazine had on their own site.  The outfits might make you look smart but definitely not sexy as promised.

Check-out the articles via links above and let me know if there is a look you would wear.  Do not worry I will not judge you because we all have our own style.  A look that works for you might not be so good on me.  That is why designers offer a variety of choices because each has a different client base.  ”What is in is not always chic, but chic is always in” or so I always say.  Feel free to quote me on that one!

Are You or a Friend a Shoe-aholic?

Do you have lots of shoes or know someone who does?  How can you spot a shoe-aholic?  It is hard to do without asking “How many pairs of shoes are in that closet?”  Check out the questions below to see if you are a shoe-aholic (ie. addicted to shoe buying).

Fashionable pair of shoes.

Do you have more than three pairs of black shoes?  Since black is the universal go-with-everything color, most everyone understands that it is acceptable for both men and women to have up to three pairs of black shoes.  For women, we must have a pair each of flats and low heels for work, and of course a pair of high heels for dressy occasions.  Men may have dress shoes, loafers or sandals, and sneakers or work shoes.  Some women justify more than 3 pairs in black because we need closed toes for fall/winter and open-toed shoes for spring/summer.  We can accept that as reasonable, so let’s agree women can have up to 6 pairs.  Now check your closet, how many pairs of black shoes do you own and how often do you wear each pair?  Are you a shoe-aholic and should you considering reducing the number of black shoes?

So you have a few more pairs of black shoes than what may be considered the norm, are you really a shoe-aholic or just an impulse buyer?  Let’s check another shoe-aholic indicator – Do you buy metallic shoes because you like the glitter or because they might go with more than one outfit you own?  How many metallic options do you possess in your shoe closet?  Are they all dressy shoes or are some more casual in style?  Silver and gold are basics for dressy shoes so we won’t count those in the too many indicators for shoe-aholics.  However, do you also posses the newer versions of metallic shoes in bronze, copper, chrome, gunmetal, pewter, platinum, or zinc.  What about the faked metallic in variations of red, blue, or other somewhat gaudy colors?  If you do, you might be a shoe-aholic or just have a slightly abnormal love for shiny stuff to be on your feet.

Another indicator of shoe-aholic syndrome is color in the shoe wardrobe.  How many colored shoes do you have?  Shoes in standard shades of black, brown, gray, cream, and white don’t count as colors – since they go with most everything they are safety nets for the shoe-aholic.  How many colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) do you have in your closet?  If you have one pair of each, then you are definitely a shoe-aholic, but it is not a severe case.  However, if you have more than one pair in most colors then you may have a bad case of shoe love.  The most severe shoe-aholic will buy shoes in any variation of a color they do not feel already exists in their closet, even if they have to buy a new outfit in order to have something to go with the newer shoes.

A final indicator for the obsessed shoe-aholic is how many boots you own.  Do you have more than one pair in basic black or brown boots?  Do you buy boots in multiple colors and styles?  A shoe-aholic will argue boots don’t count because they are not shoes.  So what is a boot anyway?  Boots are shoes with ankle or leg covers sewn on!  So they must count in the shoe-aholic evaluation – right?

Now you have decided you or your best friend is a shoe-aholic.  What should you do about it?  Being addicted to buying shoes is not a bad thing as long as you can still pay your bills and feed your family.  So maybe you don’t need to do anything but watch yourself and perhaps set restrictions for purchasing new shoes.  Restrictions you could consider might be: you only buy 1 pair a month (that’s a dozen per year total), you only buy from the clearance rack (this allows you to save more and limits your options so you save space too), or you only buy to replace shoes you get rid of (then you don’t have to find additional storage space).  However if the shoes are taking over the house, perhaps it is time to think about better storage options for the shoes or reducing the volume by donating those you don’t wear very often.

My fashion choices do not make me old!

Fashion shoe in rainbow sandal.
I admit it, I am occasionally distracted from my work when I am on the internet and see a headline that I must stop and read.  Such was the case with the title “">Five fashion mistakes that age you” in the Yahoo headline stream.  I watched the first video.  (The instantly following videos were mostly ads or celebrity looks so skip them if you wish).

I liked some of the tips on the video and others I totally disagree with.  Style is who you are.  Wearing something old is now “in”.  Some celebrities even confess to shopping at thrift stores for retro looks!  I think if you like long skirts rather than short (or have ugly knees like me) wear the length you like best.  I see different skirt lengths in fashion advertisements everywhere from the micro-mini to the maxi. The hip “youth” stores are even selling maxis as beach dresses!  Do you want your hemline full of sand?

There were the matching purse and shoe comments in the video which produced mixed feelings in me.  I like to mix and match these items.  Sometimes I want a small bag (when I will be carrying it for hours) and other times I want a giant one (when I am traveling or shopping).  These accessories can make you feel fashionable, funky, or frivolous.  However, I feel much more dressed up when both the shoe and handbag are at least in the same color family.  And what about that chunky heel tip?  Should we not feel stable when we are walking in our shoes rather than wobbling on skinny spikes?  She suggested wedges as an alternative to chunky heels.  Are wedges not the biggest, broadest heel you can buy right now?  For summer, there are some neat wedges out there with the heel being artwork but there is barely any shoe at the top to hold the heel on!  However, if you are a shoe-aholic, that may not matter anyway.

I do agree with the oversized shirt that hides the body verses a tailored shirt that flatters the figure.  But I take issue with killing the twin-set.  My hubby loves when I wear twin sets.  But I do have to admit they sometimes make me feel like an old fashioned librarian or fifties school-teacher with the wrong skirt.  I balance and update the look with contrasting-color, well-fitting slacks or printed skirts.  Twin sets are also a great alternative to the suit when you can wear business casual at work.  Do you still like twin sets?  If so, how do you make them trendier or do you even care if you are considered trendy?

Judging from the reader comments at the bottom of the Shine’s webpage following the Thread video, many of the viewers agree with me.  Go for what you like and feel comfortable in.  Find a style and cut that suits your figure, and then get it in the colors that are best for your complexion.  Do not let anyone tell you what you can not wear, but always ask for a trusted friend’s input on what you should wear.  So take a friend when you go shopping and always try it on before you leave the store with it.  You do not want to have to come back to the store to return a mistake nor do you want to lose the money if you stick it in your closet and never wear it.

Is current fashion for everyone?

Recently, I perused a fashion magazine while waiting for an appointment. As I looked at the designer duds – I thought:
  • “I would not wear that!” because it was too outrageous or just plain ugly…
  • “I could not wear that.” because it was not the right style for my shape…
  • “I should not wear that” because it was not the right color or age-inappropriate
I sometimes wonder if designers really know the shoppers or do they design mainly or their models. I think designers come up with stuff they know will most likely not sell to the masses just for the shock factor. Shocking designs get them noticed, which leads to publicity for their line. Being known means more sales in the future for the other items in their lines. Eventually when they discover what people like about their designs, they develop better stuff and create a following. What do you think? Am I right or just ranting unnecessarily?

Anyway, I think it is obvious I go for classic clothing. You know stuff I can wear anytime and dress it up or down. So I am about the give up on looking at the magazine and then I turn the page. Two-full pages of shoes! I am a confessed shoe-aholic and handbag-addict. So now I am drooling over multiple pages of shoes I think are gorgeous (a few are weird but so is fashion sometimes) and I can see them fitting into my wardrobe. After the pages of shoes, came purses and then other accessories like jewelry and scarves! Accessorizing allows you to change an outfit from casual to dressy, or from work-appropriate to fun and funky.

This is the kind of fashionable stuff I can get into. I am often designing and rearranging outfits and accessories to fit my personal style. Sometimes, I splurge on new items and have found some great places to shop I will share. Other times, I try to figure out how to creatively display my accessories or store them easily. If you like to do the same sort of thing, then join me as I rave about what I like and rant about things I do not on this blog. I will also try to share photos too. Please add your comments or your answers to my questions to increase the fun-factor.

I need to quit rambling now and get this posted. Got to go to Kohl’s, where they are having 80% off clearance items, because my feet are craving something new in RED. (If you want to see the purple alligator ankle boots I got at an after-Christmas sale, click here for YouTube TAPP dancing video
